Signs and symbols in media, media texts will generally leave signs and symbols (denotations) which the audience will connote different meaning from.

Genre - Steve Neale
Media texts will use typical conventions of a genre to indicate to an audience what style of product it is. For example, the horror genre would have dark colour schemes, supernatural elements etc.
Structuralism - Levi Strauss
Binary opposites - the human mind is able to recognize things through the use of binary opposites. For example, two opposing things like good vs bad would be placed right next to one another.
Post-modernism - Baudrillard
Postmodern culture is commonly identified with the following characteristics or features: * reflexivity * intertextuality * hybridity and eclecticism * bricolage * parody or pastiche * hyperreality * irony or knowingness.
