1: all media are carefully wrapped packages
- all texts are carefully put together, just like roads
#2: media constructs versions of reality - almost everything we see in media is never the real stuff, its a version of reality
#3: media are interpreted through individuals - media makes you think about it, as there are many meanings
#4: media is about money
-media cost money to make
#5: media promote an agenda - media texts expresses values, an ideology, or a set of social/political belief
what are the 4 questions we should ask when reading media?
who is sending the message?
who is the message targeted for?
what is the message?
why are they sending this message?
what is a stereotype?
assumptions we made about people or person, based on generalizations about groups of people
how does gender based reinforce stereotypes?
the media makes stereotypes on how a male/female should be like, expecting the all of the one gender is like that
advertising strategies
are you cool enough?, ideal for family/ kids, sounds good, cartoon characters, and family fun
how do people’s perception affect how they live and have relationships?
media creates media myths when a group of people are misrepresented because of extreme actions from a few of them.
how could people’s perception be changed?
they get to know some of the people that are being misrepresented and see if they act the way media is describing them
