what is setting and props
instead of just dressing the set, the director must be savvy to fathom how objects may bear significance on a deeper level which is also emphasising themes, creating meanings and provoking thoughts
what is costume, makeup and hair
the obvious purpose of costuming is to dress an actor according to his/her character. Lawyers wear suits, nurses wear scrubs and a drifter could wear worn out shoes ragged shirts and baggy pants
what is lighting and color
two types of broad lighting : high key lighting and low key lighting
what is positioning of character/object within frame
positioning within frame of an object can draw attention to an important character/object. a filmmaker might use positioning to indicate a relationship between people
what are the different camera shots
long shot, medium shot, close up, extreme close up, over the shoulder, point of view, tracking
what is a long shot
this is when you can see what is going on in the scene, you can see how many people are in the scene. You can usually see a lot of background in this shot
what is a medium shot
this is when you see above a character(s) waist. This includes a bit of background, to help show whats going on around them
what is a close up
this is when some background is visible but the main focus of the shot is on the actor(s) who are pictured from the head to shoulder. shows emotion of actor(s)
what is an extreme close up
this is usually a shot of just the actors eyes. usually shows emotion. no background is shown
what is a over the shoulder shot
it is exactly how it sounds, two or more actors in the frame. usually focusing on actors emotion
what is point of view
a view seen from the eyes of the actor. Makes audience feel that they are part of the movie, it also builds tension.
what is a tracking shot
this is when the camera follows the actors around. this is usually to build excitement or interest. this shot is usually used in action films
what are the two types of sounds
diegetic and non diegetic
what is a diegetic sound
a sound that the audience and the actors can hear eg footsteps
