ἐγὼ γὰρ ἐς τοῦτ᾽ ἐκβέβηκ᾽ ἀλγηδόνος
ὥσθ᾽ ἵμερός μ᾽ ὑπῆλθε γῇ τε κοὐρανῷ
λέξαι μολούσῃ δεῦρο δεσποίνης τύχας.

οὔπω γὰρ ἡ τάλαινα παύεται γόων;

ζηλῶ σ᾽: ἐν ἀρχῇ πῆμα κοὐδέπω μεσοῖ.
Tutor

Nurse

σὺν μητρὶ μέλλοι τῆσδε κοίρανος χθονὸς
Κρέων. ὁ μέντοι μῦθος εἰ σαφὴς ὅδε
οὐκ οἶδα: βουλοίμην δ᾽ ἂν οὐκ εἶναι τόδε.
Tutor

I heard the words, while not appearing to hear, as I approached the place where draughts are played, there old men sit ideally, around the holy waters of Peirene, that Creon, the ruler of this land, is going to drive these children from Corinth with their mother. However, if this story is true I do not know. I would want it not to be so.

ἀτὰρ σύ γ᾽, οὐ γὰρ καιρὸς εἰδέναι τόδε
δέσποιναν, ἡσύχαζε καὶ σίγα λόγον.

ὦ τέκν᾽, ἀκούεθ᾽ οἷος εἰς ὑμᾶς πατήρ;
ὄλοιτο μὲν μή: δεσπότης γάρ ἐστ᾽ ἐμός:
ἀτὰρ κακός γ᾽ ὢν ἐς φίλους ἁλίσκεται.

τίς δ᾽ οὐχὶ θνητῶν; ἄρτι γιγνώσκεις τόδε,
ὡς πᾶς τις αὑτὸν τοῦ πέλας μᾶλλον φιλεῖ,
[οἱ μὲν δικαίως, οἱ δὲ καὶ κέρδους χάριν]
εἰ τούσδε γ᾽ εὐνῆς οὕνεκ᾽ οὐ στέργει πατήρ;
Nurse
And will Jason put up with his children suffering this, even if he has disagreements with their mother?
Tutor
He has left the old marriage for a new one, and that man is not a friend to this house.
Nurse
We are ruined, if new bad things are added to the old ones, before these play out.
Tutor
But you, for it is not the right time for your mistress to know this, keep quiet and silent about this story.
Nurse
children, do you hear what kind of a father he is to you? May he perish not, for he is my master. But he has been caught being bad towards this house.
Tutor
Who of mortals does not? Have you only realised this now, that everyone loves his neighbour more (some justly, other for the profit of thanks) if the father no longer loves them on account of his wedding bed.

σὺ δ᾽ ὡς μάλιστα τούσδ᾽ ἐρημώσας ἔχε
καὶ μὴ πέλαζε μητρὶ δυσθυμουμένῃ.
ἤδη γὰρ εἶδον ὄμμα νιν ταυρουμένην
τοῖσδ᾽, ὥς τι δρασείουσαν: οὐδὲ παύσεται
χόλου, σάφ᾽ οἶδα, πρὶν κατασκῆψαί τινι.
ἐχθρούς γε μέντοι, μὴ φίλους, δράσειέ τι.
Nurse
Go inside the house, children, it will be well. And you, hold them (away) as much as possible and don’t go near their mother in her distress. For already I have seen her eyes turn savage towards them, as if she has something in mind, and nor will she cease her anger, I know well, before she brings it (the anger) down on someone. May she do something to enemies, not loved ones.
