τί δαὶ βιάζῃ κοὐκ ἀπαλλάσσῃ χερός;
Medea
Don’t, by your knees and newly married daughter.
Creon
you waste your words, for you would never persuade me.
Medea
but will you banish me and feel no shame for the prayer?
Creon
I don’t care for you more than my own house.
Medea
oh father, how very much I remember you now!
Creon
except for the children, it is the most dear to me by a lot.
Medea
alas, alas, love is a great bad to mortals.
Creon
I think, in whatever way fate stands.
Medea
oh zeus, don’t forget those who are responsible for the bad.
Creon
leave, foolish woman, and release me from my work.
Medea
toils are what I have and I have no lack of them.
Creon
soon you will be pushed by the hand of my slave with force.
Medea
don’t do this, be kind to me Creon.
Creon
you are going to make yourself annoying, as you appear, woman.
Medea
I will flee, I was not begging to attain that from you.
Creon
Why then are you applying force and not releasing my hand?
Medea
let me stay this one day and to complete my plans by which I am exiled, and the provisions for my children, since their father does not care, to plan something. take pity on them, as you are a father of children. it is reasonable that you have kindness to them. For it is not care for my own affairs, if I am exiled, I weep, it is their experience.
Creon
my mind is least tyrant-y, being ashamed/considerate I have many times ruined things. and now I see that I am doing wrong, nevertheless you will get this. I warn you, if the rising torch of the god sees you and your children inside the borders of the land, you will die. This speech is said without lies (i mean what I said). Now, if it is nec to remain, you may stay one day. for you will not do anything terrible of the things I fear.
ἐξευρήσεις;
κακῶς πέπρακται πανταχῇ· τίς ἀντερεῖ;
εἰ μή τι κερδαίνουσαν ἢ τεχνωμένην;
Chorus
unhappy woman, alas, alas, wretched from your pain. where will you turn? will you find some protector or home or land as your salvation from misfortune? How the god has put you in a hopeless wave of troubles.
Medea
this is bad in all ways. who will speak again? But not at all in the following way, don’t believe so. there are still struggles to the newly married couple and to he who made the marriage, no small tasks. for do you think that I would ever flatter if not to gain or devise something?
380σιγῇ δόμους ἐσβᾶσ᾿,ἵν᾿ ἔστρωται λέχος;
Medea
I would not have to address him nor touch him with my hand. He has arrived to such an extent of folly that, although it was possible for him to take my purpose by throwing my from the land, he was allowed me to stay one day in which I will make 3 of my enemies into corpses, both the father, and daughter and my husband.
having many deadly paths for them, I do not know which to try first, friends. first shall I light the wedding chamber on fire, or drive a sharpened sword through their liver, enter the house in secret where the bed is laid out? But one thing is steep to me, if I am caught creeping into the house and scheming I will die and bring joy to my enemies. the straight is best in which I am the most wise, to win them with poison.
