Med Terms 1 Flashcards
iatrogenic
illness caused by medical examination or treatment
Exogenous
Caused by agent outside of the body
Endogenous
Originating from within organism
Hypothalamus
Controls hunger, thirst, temperature
Pyrogens
Substance produced by bacteria that results in fever
Pyrexia
Fever
Hyperpyrexia
Body temperature greater than 106.7 Fahrenheit
Hypothermia
Body temperature below 95 Fahrenheit
Febrile
Showing symptoms of fever
Afebrile
No signs of fever
Vasoconstriction
Contraction of blood vessels (BP increases)
Vasodilation
Dilation of blood vessels (BP decreases)
Defervescence
Subsidence of fever
Coagulation
(Blood) forms solid mass
Dysrhythmia
Abnormality of rhythm (usually brain or heart)
ischemia
Inadequate blood supply to an organ or body part (heart muscles)
Perfusion
Passing of fluid through circulatory system or lymphatic to an organ or tissue (blood to capillary)
Stroke volume
Volume of blood pumped from left ventricle per beat
Cardiac output
Amount of blood the heart pumps through circulatory system in 1 minute (stroke volume + heart rate= cardiac output)
Systole
Phase of heart beat where muscle contracts and pumps blood from chambers to arteries (top number)
Diastole
Phase of heart beat when muscle relaxes and allows chambers to fill with blood
Palpation
Using hands to examine body
Auscultation
Listening for sounds from heart/lungs
Pallor
Unhealthy/pale appearance
Cyanosis
Blue discoloration of skin (poor circulation or not enough oxygen in blood)
Eupnea
Normal, good, unlabored breathing
Orthopnea
Shortness of breath when lying down
Dyspnea
Difficult or labored breathing
Stridor
Harsh vibrating noise when breathing (obstruction of windpipe or larynx)
Stertor
Heavy snoring or gasping
Crackle
Rattling of breath
Rhonchi
Continuous low pitched rattling lung sounds (snoring) obstruction in airway
Hyperventilation
Excessive rate and depth of respiration (loss of CO2)
Hypoventilation
Respiratory depression, ventilation inadequate (increase of CO2)
