MED SURG TEST 1 Flashcards
Two pathways to clotting
Intrinisic pathway
Extrinsic pathway
Intrinsic pathway
must be stimulated by the extrinsic pathway.
Whats Anemia
deficiency in the
- number of erythrocytes. (RBCs)
- Quantity of hemoglobin
- Volume of packed red blood cells (hematocrit)
Difference between Hemoglobin and Hematocrit
Hemoglobin is a physical count and Hematocrit is a percentage and should be 3 times hemoglobin
Three causes of anemia
- decreased Red Blood Cell production. not making enough
- Blood loss. Acute of Chronic loss. usually from slow Gi bleed.
- Increased RBC destruction. hemolysis related anemia.
what results will you have with a Upper Gi bleed
coffee ground emesis
what results will you have with a lower GI bleed
black.thick tarry stool
what are causes of increased red blood cell destruction
medications, sickle cell disease, transfusions, invasive medical products like dialysis
Clinical manifestations of anemia.
caused by bodies response to tissue hypoxia
-hbg levels are used to determine the severity of anemia.
ranges for mild, moderate and severe anemia
MILD- hbg 10-12 g/dl
MODERATE- hbg 6-10 g/dl
SEVERE- hbg < 6 g/dl
Integumentary manifestations
Pallor- from decreased hbg and blood flow to the skin
Jaundice- from increased concentration of serum bilirubin caused from destruction of RBC
Pruitis- from increased serum and skin salt concentrations. salt comes thru skin.
