What foods should someone taking anticoagulants avoid and why?
Foods high in Vitamin K should be avoided (i.e. leafy green veggies, fish, liver, coffee, and tea) because they help with blood clotting
What are the signs an symptoms of air embolism?
chest pain, dyspnea, hypoxia, anxiety, tachycardia, and hypotension
There might also be a loud churning sound over the pt’s chest
Pt teaching regarding incentive spirometry
- assume a semi/high fowler’s position
- tightly and completely cover the mouthpiece
- inhale slowly at a constant rate
- hold breath for 2-3 seconds
- exhale slowly
What does fluctuation of the fluid level in the water-seal chamber of a chest tube drainage system indicate?
good finding; a patent drainage system. The water level should rise with inspiration and fall with expiration
What does no fluctuation of the fluid level in the water-seal chamber of a chest tube drainage system indicate?
- it isn’t working properly
There can be an obstruction in the tube or the lung could have re-expanded.
What does excessive bubbling in the water seal chamber of a chest tube drainage system indicate?
There may be an air leak.
If there is excessive and vigorous bubbling then the suction might need to be decreased.
What do you do when a chest tube is dislodged from the insertion site?
- apply a sterile dressing and then call the HCP

What position should someone be put in following a tonsillectomy?
prone or sidelying to facilitate drainage

Describe gastric ulcer pain
- occurs in the upper epigastrium with localization to the left of th midline
- exacerbated by intake of food (30-60 min after)

- hemorrhage
- surgical tourniquet
What is miniere’s disease?
disorder of the inner ear that causes spontaneous episodes of vertigo alone with fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
