Med surg 2 Flashcards
Antaacids/Acid neutrulizing agents (calcium carbonate TUMS, Aluminum hydroxide)
Neutralizes gastric acid by producing neutral salts and inactivating pepsin
Histamine- 2 receptor antagonists (Famotidine Pepci, ranitidine Zantac)
decreases the amount of HCL produced by the stomach by blocking action of histamine on histamine receptors of parietal cells in the stomach
Prokinetic agents (Metoclopramide Reglan)
Promotes gastric motility, accelerates gastric emptying
PPI- proton pump inhibitors omeperozole
decreases gastric acid secretion by slowing the hydrogen and potassium ATPase pump: reducing gasrtic acid secreation by irreversibly inhibiting the enzyme that produces gastic acid
Reflux inhibitors Bethanechol choloride
used more frequently for urinary retention: but occasionally used for GERD to increase muscle tone and increase lower esophageal pressure in the treatment os gastric reflux
surface agents/ Alginate- ased barriers: sucralfate
Protextive barrier that adheres to an ulcer, protecting the ulcer from further injury from acid and pepsin
