Med Ex butterfly cath and subQ Flashcards
1
Q
why would you use intravenous catheters
A
- injection of irritating medications without the danger of perivascular infiltration
- administration of IV fluids during a surgical procedure
- administration of emergency medications rapidly
2
Q
what are three common types of IV catheters
A
- butterfly catheters
- jugular catheter
- indwelling catheter
3
Q
what is the three stage prep for butterfly catheter
A
- scrub - to remove dirt/debris
- alcohol - removes soapy residue
- solution - aseptic solution to remove micro organisms
4
Q
what are materials needed for butterfly catheter
A
- butterfly catheter
- 3 stage prep solution (only done if left for period of time)
- half inch and one inch tape
- 2x2 or 3x3 square guazes
- 3ml syringe filled with sterile fluid
- clean and disinfected clippers
5
Q
steps for butterfly cath placement
A
- set up work area with necessary materials
- lift animal to flat stable surface, close to work area and materials
- shave the hair over the vessel that you are going to place the catheter in
- three stage prep
- unwrap catheter and charge tubing with sterile saline leaving syringe attached
- have restainer hold off vessel
- after placemnt confirmed get restrainer to stop holding off and tape the wings of the cath in place

6
Q
what angle should u go in at for butterfly cath
A
- 30 degrees hold parallel to the limb
7
Q
why would u inject SubQ fluids
A
- can administer larger volumes under the skin for slower absorption of fluid replacement
- used to reverse or prevent mild to moderate dehydration
- used on patients that cant be hospitalized
- owners can be taught to administer SQ at home in renal failure patients
8
Q
what are the methods of administration possible for catheters
A
- needle and syringe method
- syringe and butterfly cath
- fluid bag with solution administration set and needle (18-20 gauge)
- fluid bag with buretrol administration set and needle (18-20 gauge)
- GIF tube - via implant under the skin used for patients needing regular/routine sub q fluids
9
Q
clipper care
A
- after every use clean and lubricated
- removign read switch housing check for compacted hair
- removing gearbox plate to expose gears - clean and grease gears
- clean felts on each side of the lever
- oil and lub armature gear
