Absorption
How the drug moves into the bloodstream.
Automatic Stop Date
The date on which specific categories of medications must be discontinued unless renewed by a Physician (Narcotics/Antibiotics).
Contraindications
Conditions under which the drug should not be given.
Controlled substance
A drug which requires a written prescription and is reportable due to the danger of addication or abuse.
Dosage
Amount of medication that is prescribed by a Physician for administration.
Indications
A list of medical conditions or diseases which the drug is intended for.
Interactions
A list of drugs or foods which may later alter the drug’s effect.
Metabolism
Physical and chemical changes a drug undergoes when administered.
Over the counter (OTC)
Drugs to which the public has direct access for purchase
Prescription drug
A drug which requires a written prescription
Restricted Drug
Does not require a prescription but is kept behind the Pharmacist’s counter
Side Effects/Adverse Reactions
Possible unpleasant or even dangerous reactions
Strength
The potency of the drug
Systemic Effect
How the drug effects widespread areas of the body
Ward Stock
A certain supply of regularly used medications are stored on the Unit. This is called Ward Stock and includes such drugs as Aspirin, acetaminophen, antacids, antidiarrheals, laxatives etc. (these are in general non-prescription drugs)
