Mechanisms of Injury Flashcards
1
Q
What are the two mechanisms of radiation injury?
A
- Ionization
2. Free radical formation
2
Q
How is ionization produced?
A
Is produced through the photoelectric effect or Compton scatter and results in the formation of a positive atom and a dislodged negative electron.
3
Q
What are free radical?
A
Is an uncharged atom or molecule that exists with a single, unpaired electron in its outermost shell.
4
Q
How does free radicals achieve stability?
A
Free radicals may:
- recombine without causing changes in the molecule.
- Combine with other free radicals and cause changes.
- Combine with ordinary molecules to form a toxin.
