Mechanism of Action Flashcards
Phosphorylated by cellular enzymes and then incorp. into viral DNA by reverse transcriptase ; DNA chain elongation terminated
NRTIs
selective inhibitors of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase ; cause conformation change to enzyme
NNRTIs
inhibit HIV aspartyl protease; prevents maturation of viral particles
HIV protease inhibitors
blocks binding of viral membrane to host cell ; binds to viral transmembrane glycoprotein and prevents conformation change that would allow entry into the cell
Entry Inhibitors
inhibits final step in integration of viral DNA into host DNA
Integrase Inhibitors
forms cytotoxic compounds that bind to proteins and DNA -> cell death
Mixed Amebicides
effective against trophozite and cyst forms; reduces population of intestinal flora ; causes leakage of cell wall
Luminal Amebicides
eliminates trophozites in liver abscesses ; inhibit protein synthesis
systemic amebicides
can survive outside the body
cyst
invasive but cant survive outside the body
trophozites
Tx of African Type of Trypanosomiasis> binds to DNA and prevents RNA protein Synthesis
Pentamidine
Tx of acute Chagas Disease; generates oxygen radicals that are toxic to the organism
Nifurtimox
tx for prophylaxis of African Trypanosomiasis> inhibits enzymes involved in energy metabolism
Suramin
alternative tx for Chagas Disease
Benznidazole
