Mechanics Overview Flashcards
What does modelling a pulley as smooth do?
Make the tension on either side of the pulley equal
What does modelling a string as light to?
Make the tension equal throughout the string
What does modelling a string as inextensible do?
Both particles connected have the same acceleration.
What does modelling something as a particle do?
Allows you to ignore air resistance and rotational effects
What does modelling something as a rod do?
Make it rigid - no bending, no thickness
What does equilibrium mean?
Forces are balances - up/down and left/right are equal to each other.
How can you prove equilibrium with vector forces?
Add together, will equal 0.
What is friction when static?
Less than or equal to uR
What is friction when in limiting equi / acceleration?
F = uR
Is there an upper limit to u?
No! Apparently
