Mechanics of Tooth Movement Flashcards
Where is the center of resistance during tooth movement? What happens if tooth has perio problems? Root resorption?
Normal- center of the root that is bound to bone
Perio- center moves apically
Root resorption- center moves occlusally
lowest effort and easiest tooth movement
uncontrolled tipping
very difficult movement to achieve, moving root through bone while keeping crown steady
root torque
the tooth’s resistance to unwanted movement
anchorage
Why is light force preferred in orthodontics?
has less anchorage toll/unwanted reaction movement
Light force is preferred in orthodontics because it has less anchorage toll/unwanted reaction movement. What determines which movement dominates?
PDL surface area of teeth –> more PDL area means more anchorage to resist tooth movement
Which teeth are less resistant to tooth movement? anterior or posterior
anterior (less PDL surface area)
occurs when there is equal anchorage (PDL surface area in equal), useful in diastema closure
reciprocal anchorage
uses temporary anchorage devices (TADs) that are screwed into the bone and should not move to act like ankylosed teeth
skeletal anchorage
bone screws vs bone plates in TADs
Bone screws- screwed into alveolar, used to move individual teeth, less invasive than bone plates
Bone plates- multiple screws attached to basal bone for extensive tooth
minimum age for TAD placement
