mechanics of breathing Flashcards
what happens at the first stage of inspiration at rest
the diaphragm and external intercostals contract lifting the rib cage up and out
what effect does the first stage have on the theoretic cavity
increase the size inside in turn decreasing the pressure
what happens to the partial pressure of the gases in the lungs
the pressure decreases causing air from the outside to rush in
what happens as a result of the decrease in partial pressure in the lungs
air rushes into the lungs leading to inspiration
what happens at the first stage of expiration at rest
the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax flattening the rib cage
what does this do to the theoretic cavity
decreases the area in the cavity increasing pressure
what happens to the partial pressure in the lungs because of this
increases the pressure in the lungs
what does the increase in pressure cause
air to rush out of the lungs cause you to
exhale
