Mechanics Lesson Definitions Flashcards
What is Newton?
- The force that causes 1kg to accelerate at 1ms^2
What is a normal reaction?
- Acts perpendicular to the surface which the object is resting on, this is equal and opposite to the force exerted on the surface by the object. This is determined largely by gravity and the mass of the object.
What is the frictional force?
-The frictional force opposes motion between two “rough” surfaces. This always opposes the direction of motion.
What is tension?
- If an object is being pulling along, then the force acting on the object is called tension. Tension is a pulling force.
What is thrust?
-If an object is being pushed along (for exampel a rod), then the force acting on the object is called the Thrust ( or sometimes compression).
What is resistance?
Any object moving through air, fluid or a solid will experience resistsance, this is caused by the particles being in the way.
What is gravity?
-This is the force between any object and the earth. The force allows it to float.
What is a vector?
- Is a quantity that has both magnitude and direction.
What is a scalar quantity?
- Something that has magnitude only
What is distance?
- A measure of length (M)
What is speed?
- A measure of how quickly something moves (ms-1)
What is time?
-Measure of ongong events
What is mass?
-A measure of quanitity of matter in an object (kg)
What is displacement?
-Rate of chance of displacement?
What is acceleration?
-Rate of chage in velocity
