Lesson 1 Stats Flashcards
What is the population?
- The set of things that we are interested in.
What is the sample?
- A subset of the popoulation
What is the median?
- The middle number or element when the data set is in order
What is the mean?
- Everything divided by the population size. After being added up.
What is the interquartile range?
Find the upper quartile, then find the lower quartile range. This is used to get rid of bias in votes such as the olympics.
What are the mean, range, mode, and median all known as?
- Population parameters.
What is a statistic?
A value taken from a single sample. One or more statistics can be used to estimate a parameter. However this estimate depends on how representative the sample is of the population.
What is the list of population?
- The list that is called the sampling frame.
What is it called when data is collected from the entire sampling frame?
In some instances a census, for example the whole population.
List 3 sampling methods
- Simple random
- Systematic sampling
- Stratified
What is simple random sampling?
-Completely random, every member of the population has an eqaul chance of being picked for sampling.
What is systematic sampling?
- Having a formula for asking someone. For example asking every other ten people the question selected.
What is stratified sampling?
- Sampling where it takes into account the sample size. To ensure each gruop is properly represented, the s ample must be split across differenet groups in the same proportion as in the population size.
