Mechanics Chapter 10 Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object at rest will stay at rest or an object moving with constant velocity will retain this velocity unless an unbalanced force acts on the object
What does a resultant force on an object cause?
Acceleration in the same direction as the resultant force
How is the resultant of two or more forces given as vectors calculated?
The sum of these vectors
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
The force needed to accelerate a particle is equal to the product of the mass of the particle and the acceleration produced; F = ma
How are problems involving vector forces solved?
Use F = ma where F and a are vectors
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
