Mechanics Flashcards
Identify Newtons First Law of Motion?
Objects either stay at rest or moves with constant velocity unless acted on by a force.
What is the equation associated with Newton’s second law?
F=ma
What is the difference between weight and mass. And what are the units for both?
Weight is in Newtons because it is the mass acted upon by a gravity. Where as mass is not. Therefore Mass is in Kg. Weight is in Newtons.
When an object is acted on by two unequal forces acting in opposite directions which direction would the object travel?
In the direction of the larger force.
Identify what drag force depends on?
The shape of the object/Its speed/ the viscosity of the fluid, which is a measure of how easily the fluid flows past a surface.
Define Terminal Speed?
When the drag force on it is equal and opposite to its weight.
Equation for a moving powered Vehicle?
A=Fe-Fr/m
Define momentum and give units.
Mass x Velocity, measured in kgm/s.
What is Impulse?
FΔT=MV
What does the area under a force-time graph?
Momentum
State the principle of conservation of momentum?
A system of interacting objects, the total momentum remains constant, provided no external resultant force acts on the system.
What is an elastic collision?
A collision where there is no loss of kinetic energy.
What is work done?
Force x Distance moved in the direction of the force.
What is kinetic energy?
Is the energy of an object due to its motion. E=1/2mv2
What is potential energy?
Is the energy of an object due to its position. E=mgh
