Mechanics Flashcards
Vector + eg.
magnitude and direction eg. Velocity, displacement
Scalar + eg.
Magnitude only eg. Time, mass, distance, speed
The principle of conservation of momentum
States that in any closed system (of colliding bodies), the total momentum before the collision is equal to the total momentum after the collision
Newton’s 1st law of motion
A body remains at rest or at a constant velocity unless a resultant force is acting on it
Newton’s 2nd law of motion
The rate of change of momentum of a body is proportional to the applied force and takes place in the direction of that force
Newton’s 3rd law of motion
To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
Newton’s law of universal gravitation
The force of attraction between any two objects is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them
Boyle’s law
When a fixed mass of gas is at a constant temperature, it’s pressure is inversely proportional to its volume
Archimedes’ principle
When a body is immersed in a fluid, it experiences an up thrust (or apparent loss in weight) which is equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces
Law of flotation
A floating body displaces its on weight of fluid
Hooke’s law
The extension of an elastic material is directly proportional to the force producing that extension
