Mechanics Flashcards
What is a moment?
moment = force x perpendicular distance, the moment of a force is its turning affect about a fixed point
What is a couple?
a couple is a pair of equal forces acting in opposite directions.
What is an objects center of mass?
This is where all the forces act upon on an object, and where the mass seems to be concentrated.
What is acceleration?
The rate at which velocity changes
What is terminal velocity?
When the resistive force (such as drag) balances with the forward force (example being gravity)
What is newtons first law?
An object will remain at rest or constant velocity, unless acted upon by an resultant force
What is newtons second law?
force = chance of momentum / time
What is newtons third law?
Every force has an equal and opposite reaction
What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work so energy = work done
What is work done?
Work done= force x distance
What is conservation of momentum?
The momentum before an event will equal the momentum after the event
What is the difference between an elastic and inelastic collision?
Kinetic energy is conserved in an elastic collision and in an inelastic collision energy is not conserved and energy is transferred to its surroundings.
What does the area under a force time graph represent?
Impulse.
What is a scalar quantity with examples.
A scalar quantity is a quantity with just magnitude (size) such as speed or distance.
What is a vector quantity with examples.
A vector quantity is a quantity with both direction and magnitude (size) such as velocity or displacement.
