Mechanics Flashcards
What are the 4 suvat equations?
v=u+at
s=1/2(v+u)t
v^2=u^2+2as
s=ut+1/2at^2
What are newton’s 3 laws?
1st - an object will remain stationary or moving at a constant speed until a resultant force acts (inertia)
2nd - F=ma
3rd - if object A exerts a force on object B, object B will exert an equal and opposite force on object A
What is drag dependent on?
The viscosity if the fluid
Speed
Objects surface area
How do we reduce the force of impact?
Increase the time for the impact. Crumple zones increase the time it takes for the car to come to a stop, increasing the impact time, and decreasing the force on the passengers
Difference between elastic and inelastic collisions?
In elastic collisions kinetic energy is conserved, in inelastic collisions kinetic energy is not conserved
What affects stability?
The base area
The mass
What is a couple?
A pair of forces of equal size which act parallel to each other in opposite directions
What is the moment of a couple?
One force × perpendicular distance between the two forces
