Materials Flashcards
What is the spring constant?
Measures a material’s resistance to being pulled apart, the stiffness. It is the gradient of a force-extension graph.
Why is the unloading curve below the loading curve for a rubber band?
Some energy is transferred to the rubber band as internal energy and it is represented by the area between the curves.
How do you find stress and strain?
Stress=F/A
Strain=E/L
What is the young modulus?
A measure of the stiffness of a material. Found by the gradient of a stress-strain curve.
What is the elastic limit?
The point beyond which a material will no longer return to its original size when the force is removed
What is the limit of proportionality?
The point beyond which the material no longer obeys Hooke’s law
What is elastic material?
Materials that return to their original length once the force is removed
What is a plastic material?
Materials that remain deformed once the force is removed
What does brittle mean?
A brittle material show very little plastic deformation before breaking
What does ductile mean?
Materials that have large plastic deformations before breaking (can be drawn into wires)
