Mechanics Flashcards
What are the formulas for work, mechanical advantage, and speed ratio?
Work = Force x Distance MA = Output force/Input force SR = Input distance/Output distance
What is a machine?
A device that does work.
What do most machines consist of?
A number of elements, such as gears and ball bearings, that work together in a complex way.
What are the six types of machines?
Lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the inclined plane, the wedge, and the screw.
What is Mechanical Advantage?
The amount of help you can get from using a machine to do something instead of just doing it with purely your own strength.
What is class 1?
FULCRUM is in the center
Ex. Scissors, pliers,
What is class 2?
LOAD is in the center
Ex. Stapler, wheelbarrow,
What is class 3?
EFFORT is in the center
Ex. Hockey stick, baseball bat
What are inclined planes?
Increase distance over which force is applied so the effort force is decreased, which makes it seem easier!
The amount of WORK done in the scientific sense has either stayed the same or actually increased!
What is input work?
Work done by the effort
What is output work?
Work done on the load
What is work measured in?
Joules
What is effort measured in?
Newtons
