Mechanics Flashcards
Why do both sides of a pulley have the same acceleration
light in extensible string = tension the same on both sides
Mechanics is the study of what?
motion
what are the modelling assumptions made when the string is light and inextensible?
- acceleration on both sides of the string is the same
- tension is equal throughout due to the string having no mass
A car is is decelerating at a constant rate of 3.5 ms-2 from A to B. When it reaches B, the car has travelled 210 metres over a period of 10 seconds.
Work out the initial velocity of the car.
What is a particle and what are the modelling assumptions made for a particle?
- Dimensions of the object are negligible
- The weight acts from the centre of mass of each object, and ignores wind resistance and rotational forces
aka all the weight acts from where the particle “stands”
What is a particle and what are the modelling assumptions made for a particle?
Dimensions of the object are negligible
What is a rod and what are the modelling assumptions made for a rod?
All dimensions but one are negligible ( like a pole)
What is an inextensible string and what are the modelling assumptions made for an inextensible string?
A string that doesn’t stretch under a load
acceleration is the same in objects connected by a taut string
What are the 5 suvat equations
