Mechanics 1 Flashcards
What are they types of forces?
contact (friction, air resistance, tension)
non-contact (magnetic, electromagnetic, gravity)
What happens to an object when a force is exerted onto it?
The object changes:
speed
direction of movement
shape
How can forces affect motion?
- start moving
- move faster
- move slower
- stop moving
What is mass?
Measure of the quantity of matter that makes up an object (kg).
What is weight?
A force - effect of Earth’s gravity on an object (N).
What is Hooke’s Law?
Extension of a spring is directly proportional to the applied force.
What does elastic mean?
When the force is removed, the spring will return to its original length.
What does inelastic mean?
When the force is removed, the spring doesn’t return to its original length, it’s permanently deformed.
What is a moment?
The turning effect on an object, caused by forces.
What affects the size of a moment?
- size of the applied force
- perpendicular distance from the force to the pivot
What does it mean for an object to be balanced?
The sum of the clockwise moment = the sum of the anticlockwise moment, it is in equilibrium.
What is the centre of gravity?
Where the point of gravity acts from.
Where is the centre of gravity in regular objects?
In the middle.
How to measure force of a spring?
Force = spring constant x extension
f=kx
N = N/m x m
