Mechanical Weathering Flashcards
1
Q
Define weathering.
A
The break down or decay of rocks in its original place.
2
Q
Define mechanical weathering.
A
The break down of rocks by physical processes producing scree.
3
Q
Describe freeze-thaw.
A
Water seeps into cracks in a rock. It freezes and widens the crack. The ice then melts and seeps deeper into the rock. This process will repeat until the rock breaks apart.
4
Q
Describe salt-weathering.
A
When sea water evaporates in cracks and holes salt crystals grow and expand. This puts pressure on the rocks and flakes may eventually break off.
