Mechanical components Flashcards
What is a mechatronic system?
The integration of mechanical and electronic systems to produce a functioning system.
List key mechanical components of a mechatronics system.
- Gears
- Cams and followers
- Linkages
- Levers
- Pulleys
Give examples of mechatronic systems.
- Robotic arms
- Computer numerical control (CNC) machines
- Automated locking systems
- Car anti-lock braking systems
- Moving camera systems
How is gear ratio calculated?
Number of teeth on driven gear / number of teeth on driver gear.
What effect does a larger gear driving a smaller gear have?
Increases speed but reduces torque.
What effect does a smaller gear driving a larger gear have?
Increases torque but decreases speed.
Define rotary motion.
Motion in a circle.
Define reciprocating motion.
Motion that goes back and forth.
What is the function of cams and followers?
To turn rotary motion into reciprocating motion.
What are linkages used for in mechanical systems?
To change the type or direction of motion, and/or the size of a force.
List common types of linkages.
- Reverse motion linkages
- Parallel motion linkages
- Bell cranks
What are the three main types of lever?
- 1st class lever
- 2nd class lever
- 3rd class lever
Give an example of a 1st class lever.
Seesaw or a pair of scissors.
What is the purpose of levers?
To move a big force using a smaller, effort force.
How is mechanical advantage calculated for pulleys?
Load force / effort force.
What do pulleys do?
Reduce effort when lifting loads.
What is the mechanical advantage of a pulley?
Its ability to lift a large load with a small effort force.
Fill in the blank: Gears are __________ wheels that are arranged in gear trains.
