Q

What is a lever? Advantage? Disadvantage?

A

A lever is a rigid bar or plank that can rotate around a fixed point called a pivot or fulcrum. They are used to reduce a force.
- It is a simple machine.

Advantage:

  • reduce force need to do a particular task.
  • can move large load

Disadvantage:
- to list a large load, you must move a greater distance than the load moves.

Example: Teeter taughter.

Q

What is an inclined plane? Advantage? Disadvantage?

A

An inclined plane is a simple machine that has a flat surface. It carries a load on an angle to another flat surface.

Advantage:

  • makes it easier move a load higher than it is.
  • makes it easier to lift heavy objects using a smaller force.

Disadvantage:
- to make it easier to move a load higher, you have to move over a much longer distance.

Example: Ramp.

Q

What is a wedge? Advantage? Disadvantage?

A

A wedge is a simple machine that is forced into an object. It looks like an inclined plane.

Advantage:
- increases force applied to object.

Disadvantage:
-moves a greater distance into the object than it splits apart.

Example: Knife.

Q

What is a screw? Advantage? Disadvantage?

A

A screw is a cylinder with a groove cut in a spiral on the outside. It helps increase the forces you use.

Advantage:
- helps you increase the force you use.

Disadvantage:
- moves objects in a straight line very slowly.

Example: Screw.

Q

What is a pulley? Advantage? Disadvantage?

A

A pulley is a simple machine that uses a wire, rope, or cable moving on a grooved wheel. Pulleys help you lift larger loads than you could lift on your own.

Advantage:

  • help you lift larger loads.
  • can be moveable.

Example: Helps lift water.

Q

What is a wheel and axle? Advantage? Disadvantage?

A

A wheel and axle is a simple machine that is a combination of two wheels of different diameters.

Advantage:
-powerful motion.

Disadvantage:
- longer the motion, the more power.

Example: Doorknob.

Q

What are gears?

A

Gears are a pair of wheels that link. The gears rotate together and this creates force. One gear wheel transfers turning motion and the force to the other.

Example: Gears on a bike.

Q

What is the mechanical advantage of a machine?

A

The mechanical advantage of a machine is the amount of force a machine can multiply. You can calculate the mechanical by output / input. There is no measure beside the answer of a mechanical advantage.

Example: My car has an output force of 50N and an input force of 6N. I need to calculate the MA from this.

Q

What is the output force of a machine?

A

The output force of a machine is the force the machine applies to the object.

Example: A man pushes a cart up a ramp. The cart is the output force.

17
Q

What is the speed ratio of a machine?

A

The speed ratio of a machine is a measure of how speed of the object is affected by a machine. Din / dout. There is no measurement beside the answer of the speed ratio.

Example: I need to push my cart a distance of 5m up a ramp 2m high. What is my speed ratio?

18
Q

What is friction?

A

Friction is a force that opposes motion.

Example: When you rub your hands together.

19
Q

What is the efficiency of a machine?

A

Efficiency of a machine is a measurement of how well a machine or device used energy.
The formula is: MA / SR x 100.

Example: I need to figure out the efficiency of my bike. The MA is 10 and the SR is 11. What is the efficiency.

20
Q

What is work?

A

Scientifically, work happens when a force acts on an object to make the object move.

Example: When I lift a book.

21
Q

What is a Hydraulic System?

A

A Hydraulic System is a liquid used under pressure to move loads.

Example: A hair dressers chair.

22
Q

What is pressure?

A

Pressure is a measure of the amount of force applied to a given area.

Example: Pushing on a wall.

23
Q

What is Pascals Law?

A

Pascals Law is a pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid. This law makes Hydraulic Systems an pneumatic Systems possible.

Example: The Pascal Law makes my Hydraulic System work.

24
Q

What does function mean?

A

The function is what the device is supposed to do.

Example: The function of a bike is to make you move faster.

25
Q

What does design mean?

A

The design is the physical form of the device that makes it usable.

Example: Road bikes are slimmer to help us go fast on a levelled out surface.

26
Q

What is the function of gears?

A

Change direction, increase or decrease force or speed.

27
Q

How can you increase the speed of gears?

A

Large gear drives a small gear: more speed, decreases torque
Small gears drives a large gear:
Less speed, increases torque.
