Measures of Central Tendency Terminology Flashcards
Statistic is a
measure of a sample of observations.
Population includes
all members of a specified group.
Parameter is
when the statistic summarizes all possible observations of a population.
Sample statistic (subset of the population) is…
A set of observations that is a subset of a population.
Measure of central tendency specifies
where the data is centered.
Measures of locations are quantitative measures that
describe the location or distribution of data. They include not only measures such as central tendency, but also percentiles and so on.
Outlier is an
extreme value in observation that may indicate error or rare occurrences.
There are several ideas on what to do with outliers when analyzing:
1 - Do nothing
But only in cases when the values are legitimate and correctly recorded.
2 - Delete all the outliers
At this point, the measure of central tendency is called the trimmed mean.
3 - Replace the outliers with another values
In this case, the measure of central tendency will be called winsorized mean.
Winsorized mean is when…
Lowest (or highest) values were assigned to a one specific value.
