Measures Of Central Tendencies Flashcards
What is a numerical data set?
Every value in the set is a number
What is a statistical question?
One that can be answered by collecting data that vary.
What is a categorical data set?
Can take on non-numerical values, such as names of colors
What are statistics?
Deal with collecting, organizing, and interpreting data.
What is data?
Pieces of information.
What are measures of central tendencies?
Describe the center of a set of data
What is a mean?
Average; the sum of the data set divided by the number of pieces of data.
What is a median?
Is the middle number of the ordered data or the mean of the middle two numbers. Half the data is greater than the median; half he data is less than the median.
What is a mode?
The number or numbers that occur most often.
What is Measure of Variability?
Describes how much the data vary.
What is the Range?
Is a measure of variability. It is the difference between the greatest and least values of the set of data.
A large range indicates that the data are spread out.
A small range indicates that the data are close.
What is an Outlier?
A data value that is much greater or much less than others in the data set.
When is finding the mean appropriate?
When the data have no extreme values.
When is finding the median appropriate?
The data have no extreme values.
And
There are no big gaps in the middle of the data.
When is finding the mode appropriate?
When the data have many repeated numbers.
