Algebra: Expressions Flashcards
What is a variable?
Is a symbol, usually a letter used to represent a number.
What is the definition of Algebra?
Is a language of symbols, including variables.
What is an algebraic expression?
Is a combination of numbers, variables, and at least one operation.
What is a constant?
A value that does not change
What is a Coefficient?
A number placed before a variable and means multiplying.
Example: 3x
x is the variable➡️coefficient (means 3 times x)
What does evaluate mean?
Means to find the value of.
What are 3 ways to show multiplication?
3▪; ️using a dot
3(2); using parentheses
3x; coefficient with a variable
What is the Order of Operations?
- Simplify the expressions inside grouping symbols, like ( )
- Find the values of all powers. (Exponents)
- Multiply in order from ⭐️LEFT TO RIGHT.⭐️
- Add and subtract in order from ⭐️LEFT TO RIGHT.⭐️
ALSO KNOWN AS PEMDAS OR GEMS.
What are the four properties?
Commutative Property, Associative Property, Identity Property, and
Distributive Property.
What is the definition of the Commutative Property?
The order on which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change their sum or product.
(Only holds for Addition and Multiplication)
What is the definition of the Associative Property?
The way in which three numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change their sum or product.
(Only holds for Addition and Multiplication)
What is the definition of the Identity Property?
The sum of an addend and 0 is the addend.
The product of a factor and 1 is the factor.
(Only holds for Addition and Multiplication)
What is the definition of the Distributive Property?
To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parenthesis. (Only holds for Addition and Multiplication)
2(7+4)= 2▪️7+2▪️4
= 14+8
=22
What is a property?
Are statements that are true for any number
What are Equivalent Expressions?
Expressions that have the same value.
