Measurements Flashcards
How do you convert millimeters to centimeters?
You move the decimal place to the left. (Divide by 10)
How do you convert centimeters to millimeters?
You add a zero the the right of the number of centimeters. When you multiply it by 10 you move the decimal place right
How do you change meters to centimeters?
You multiply by 100 (move decimal two places to the right.)
How do you change millimeters to meters?
You divide by 1000 (move decimal three places to the left)
How do you change meters to kilometers?
You divide by 1000 (move decimal three places to the left)
How do you change milliliters to liters?
You divide by 1000 (move decimal three places to the left)
How do you change a liter to a milliliter?
You multiply by 1000 (move decimal three places to the right)
How do you change a gram to a kilogram?
You divide by 1000 (move the decimal three places to the left)
How do you change grams to milligrams?
You multiply by 1000 (move the decimal three places to the right)
How many inches are in one meter?
39.37 in = 1m
How many pounds are in one kilogram?
2.2lbs = 1kg
How do you make a conversion?
How many centimeters are in 1.71 meters?
You make a conversion by:
1. Placing the units you want to convert on the bottom
100cm/1m
2. Multiply the number you want to convert by the conversion factor
1.71m • 100cm/1m
Convert 3.86 inches into centimeters (use paper if you need to)
- 80cm
3. 86 • 2.54cm/1in= 9.80
Rules for counting significant figures:
- nonzero integers are always sig. figs.
- Zeros:
•leading zeros are zeros that precede all of the nonzero digits. They do not count as sig. figs.
• captive zeros are zeros between nonzero digits. They always count as sig. figs.
•trailing zeros are zeros at the right end of a number. They are significant only if the number contains a decimal point. - Exact numbers which are determined by counting are assumed to have an infinite number of sig. figs.
Rules for rounding off:
1 in a series of calculations , carry the extra digits through the final results then round off
2 if the digit to be removed is
a. less than 5, the preceding digit stays the same.
b. equal to or greater than 5, the preceding digit is increased by 1.
