Chapter 2- The Chemistry of Life Vocabulary Flashcards
Nucleus
The center of the atom. Made of protons and neutrons
Atom
From the Greek word atomos; means “unable to be cut”
Electron
Negatively charged particle in constant motion in the space surrounding the atom
Element
Pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom
Isotope
An element with a different amount of neutrons than normal.
Compound
Substance formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements in definite proportions
Ionic bond
One or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
Ion
Positively and negatively charged atoms
Covalent bonds
Form when electrons are shared between atoms
Molecule
Smallest unit of most compounds
van der Waals forces
Intermolecular forces of attraction
Cohesion
An attraction of two molecules of the same substance
Adhesion
The attraction of two molecules of different substances
Mixture
Material composed of two or more elements or compounds that are physically mixed together but not chemically combined
Solution
Ions gradually disperse in the water forming a type of mixture
Solute
The substance being dissolved
Solvent
The substance in which the solute dissolves
Suspensions
Mixtures of water and non-dissolved materials
pH scale
Indicates the concentration of H+ ions in a solution
Acid
Any compound that forms H+ ions in a solution
Base
Produces hydroxide (OH-) ions in a solution
Buffer
Weak acids or bases that can combine with strong acids or bases to prevent sharp, sudden changes in pH
Monomer
Building block of a polymer
Polymer
Long chain of monomers
