Measurement and Basic Statistics Describing Data Flashcards
Classification or categorization based on one or more distinguishing characteristics
Nominal Scales
Aside from classification, rank-ordering on some classifications is permissible.
Ordinal Scales
No absolute zero point, can be added and subtracted not multiplied. Example: IQ scores
Interval Scales
Has all properties of nominal, ordinal, and ratio scales but has an absolute zero point
Ratio Scales
a set of test scores arrayed for recording or study.
Distribution
a straightforward, unmodified accounting of performance that is usually numerical.
Raw Score
all scores are listed alongside the number of times each score occurred.
Frequency Distribution
histogram, bar graph, and frequency polygon.
Graphical representations:
statistic that indicates the average or midmost score between extreme scores in a distribution.
Measure of Central Tendency
sum of the observations divided by the number of observations.
Mean
defined as the middle score of the distribution.
Median
is the most frequently occurring score in a distribution
