Measurement Flashcards
Opisimeter
An opisometer can be used to measure short curved lines for example a road or a river on a map
Measuring length
A meter stick or ruler measures straight lines
Trundle wheel
Used to measure long curved lengths for example around the flower bed
Vernier callipers
To find a diameter or width of a solid object for example marble or piping
Measuring an area
Area is how much space something covers
Area = Length x width
Mass
Mass I an amount of matter in an object
It is measured in a lab with an electronic balance
Volume
Volume tell you how much space something takes up
Length x Width x Height
Volume of an irregular object
We can measure the volume of an irregular using an graduated cylinder and/or overflow can
Float
An object will float it it is less dense then the liquid and it will sink if it is more dense then the liquid
If you were in the Dead Sea …..
You would float and it is very rare to drown
Ice
Ice expands when it goes from a liquid to a solid. The molecules spread out, making it less dense. Ice will float on water because ice is less dense the water
Speed
Unit is meters per second
The distance travelled per unit time is know as the speed
Speed = distances divided by time
Velocity
Velocity of an object is the distance it travels per unit time ,in a given direction (m/s)
Acceleration
The change in velocity per second is know as the acceleration of the body, acceleration is measured in meter per second per second (m/s/s)
