Heat Flashcards
Solids, liquids and gases
When heated
Solids, liquids and gases
Contract when cooled
What is the unit of energy
Joule
Water
Begins to expand when cooled below 4 degrees Celsius
Bimetallic strip
Shows that not all metals expand at the same rate , change e.g thermostat in heating or an iron
Conduction
Heat travels from particle to particle along a substance
Convection
Heat travels through a fluid when the particles move and carry heat
Radiation
Heat travels from a hot object without the need for a medium, does not need a solid , liquid or gas to go through will flow through a vacuum
Insulator
Something that doesn’t allow heat to flow through it
Eg plastic
Conductor
Something that allows energy eg heat to flow through it. Eg metal is a good conductor
Air
is. A good insulator, keeps animals warm,is trapped by fur and helps to insulate animals
Layers
The hairs on our arms are not very good at keeping us warm, if we wear layers of clothes, air is trapped to keep us warm
Temperature
A measure of how hot an object is
Measured with a thermometer
We deal with two types of thermometer
Mercury thermometers and alcohols thermometer
Heat
Is a form of energy
