Measurable Dimensions of Behavior
Repeatably/ countably are instances of what?
instances of a response class can occur repeatedly through time
Examples
Count, Frequency/Rate or Celeration
What is temporal extent?
`Every instance of behavior occurs during some amount of time
Example- Duration- total duration per session, duration per occurence
What is temporal locus?
Every instance of behavior occurs at a certain point in time with respect of other events.
Example- Response latency, Inter response time (IRT)
What are derivative measures?
Percentages, and Trials to Criterion
What are definitional measures?
Topography and Magnitude
What is count?
It is a type of repeatability . Count is the number of occurrences of a behavior.
Examples- Number of correct spelling words
Number of times Margie was late, number of cookies eaten, how many times Joey hit Johnny
What is rate/frequency?
The number of responses per unit of time
Examples- words typed per minute, three beers in one hour, one aggressive episode per 30 minutes
What are some things to consider using rate/frequency?
Unit of time, rates of both correct and incorrect response rates and complexity of the response
What are free operants?
They are behaviors that have discrete beginning and ending points, require minimal displacement in time and space, can be emitted at any time, don’t require much time, and can be emitted over wide rage of response rate
Example- Bar press, hand wave, steps taken, words read
What should and shouldn’t be used with free operants?
Rate is great to use with free operants
Don’t use rate for discrete trail responses
and measuring duration
What is celeration?
The measure of how rates of response change over time
What are two types of celeration?
Acceleration- gets faster over time example- increasing reading speed
Deceleration- gets slower over time
Example- slowing down the pace of eating
What is duration?
Amount of time in which a behavior occurs and a type of temporal extent
What is total duration per session?
Cumulative amount of time in which a person engaged in a behavior
Example Johnny cried for total of 95 minutes today Margie was on task for 39 of the 45 minutes observed
What is duration per occurance?
Duration of time that each instance of the target behavior occurs. Example. It took Kathy 8 minutes to walk from classroom to bathroom Marty tantrummed two times today once for 15 mins and 18 mins
What is response latency?
A type of temporal locus that is elapsed time between the onset of a stimulus and the initiation of a response.
Example. It took 5 seconds for George to respond to his name
What is inter-response time? (IRT)
Amount of time that elapses between two consecutive instances of a response.
Example. It takes Marty 25 sec to transition to the next activity in his work schedule
What are percentages?
Expresses the proportional quantity of some event in terms of the number of times the event occurred per 100 opportunities
Example- 39 correct/50 total questions=.79.x100 =79%
What are trials-to-criterion?
Number of response opportunities needed to achieve a predetermined level of performance.
Example. It took Sammy 17 trials to correctly write his first name
What is topography?
Is the physical form or shape of a behavior. Responses of varying form can be detected form one another
What is magnitude?
Force or intensity with which a response is emitted
Example-speaking too loud
