Measurement Flashcards
What are the seven base SI quantities?
Mass, Time, Length, Electric Current, Temperature, Amount of substance and Luminous Intensity
What are the prefixes and symbols for 10^-1, 10^-2, 10^-3, 10^-6, 10^-9, 10^-12,
deci (d), centi (c), milli (m), micro (µ), nano (n), pico (p)
What is a systematic error?
A systematic error is an error that occurs due to some fixed rule or pattern such that they yield a general overestimation or underestimation of the true value of the measured quanitity.
What is a random error?
A random error is an error that occurs without a fixed pattern such that a set of measurements done under the same conditions have an equally like chance of being greater or less than the true value.
What is accuracy?
Accuracy refers to how closely a measured quantitiy agrees with a ‘true’ value
What is precision?
Precision refers to how closely individual measurements agree with each other without reference to any ‘true’ value.
What are scalar quantities?
Scalar quantities are quanitities with magnitude only
What are vector quantities?
A vector is a quanitity which has both magnitude and direction
