Dynamics Flashcards
Define mass
The mass of a body is a measure of its resistance to change in state of motion
Define momentum
The momentum of a body is defined as the product of its mass and velocity
p = mv
Define force
The force exerted by X on Y is defined as the rate of change of momentum of Y produced by X
F = dp/dt
Define impulse
The impulse of a force is defined as the product of the force and the time of impact of the force.
J = Ft
What is Newton’s First Law of Motion?
In the absence of resultant external force acting on the it, a body at rest will remain at rest and a body in motion will continue its motion at constant velocity.
What is Newton’s Second Law of Motion?
The rate of change in the momentum of a body is proportional to the resultant external force that acts on it, and the change in momentum is in the direction of the force.
Total F = dp/dt
What is Newton’s Third Law of Motion?
When body A exerts a action force on body B, body B exert a reaction force on body A that is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the action force.
What is the principle of conservation of linear momentum?
The principle of conservation of linear momentum states that in the absence of external forces, the total momentum of bodies in a system remains constant.
