Measles Flashcards
What are the side effects of MMR vaccine and when do they occur?
6-12 days after vaccination. 5-15% of people develop a high fever and 5% develop a generalised rash; pain at the injection site. Increased risk of febrile seizures 8-14 days following with no long term consequences.
What are the contraindications to MMR and what are the precautions?
Anaphylaxis, immunocompromise, pregnancy
History of febrile seizures or first degree relative with history of seizures (at increased risk but benefit vaccination outweighs risk); thrombocytopenia (could check serology to see if needs second dose); aspirin (Travax says to stop for 6 weeks following MMRV or V vaccine but AIH says no need); receipt of antibody containing blood product in the last year; need for tuberculin skin testing
