Define Development
When a country develops it gets better for the people living there - their quality of life improves e.g wealth, health and safety. It is usually referred to as economic development.
What is gross domestic product (GDP)?
The total value of goods and services a country produces in a year. Its often given in US dollars.

What is gross national income (GNI)?
The toal value of goods and services people of that nationality produce in a year (i.e GPD + money from people living abroad). Its often given in US$ . This is the mearsure of wealth and the development gets higher.
What is GNI per head?
GNI divided by the population of a country. It sometimes called GNI per capita. It is a mearsure of wealth and the development gets higher.
What is the birth rate?
The numbef of live babies born per thousand of the population per year. It is a mearsure of womens rights and the development gets lower.
What is death rate?
The number of deaths per thousand of the population per year. It is a measure of health and the development gets lower.
What does infant mortality rate mean?
The number of babies who die under 1 year old, per thousand babies born. This is a mearsure of health and the developmetn gets lower.
What does people per doctor mean?
The avaerage number of people for each doctor. This is a mearsure of health and the development gets lower.
What is the literacy rate?
The percentage of adults who can read and write. This is a mearsure of education and the development gets higher.
Access to safe water means?
The percentage of people who can get clean drinking water. This is a mearsure of heath and the development gets higher.
What does life expectancy mean?
The average age a person can expect to live to. This is a measure of health and the development gets higher.
What does human development index (HDI) mean?
This is a number that’s calculated using life expectancy, literacy rate, education level (e.g degree) and income per hand. This is a mearsure of lots of things such has education, health and wealth. The development gets higher.
What are the disadvantages of measuring development?
- Economic mearsures can be inaccurate.
- The measures can be misleading when used on their own.
