Meanings Flashcards
What is the law of conservation of mass?
The idea that mass is not lost or gained during a chemical reaction.
What defines a metal?
Any element that is shiny when polished, conducts heat and electricity well, is flexible, and often has a high melting point.
What is a metal oxide?
A metal that has been combined with oxygen in a chemical reaction: metal + oxygen – metal oxide.
What is a non-metal?
Any element that is not shiny when polished, doesn’t conduct heat and electricity, isn’t flexible, and often doesn’t have a high melting point.
What is oxidation?
Reacting with oxygen.
What is an oxide?
A compound of a metal or nonmetal with oxygen.
What is phlogiston?
A theory that now doesn’t exist: wood (hydrocarbon) – calx + phlogiston.
What is acid rain?
Rainwater that is more acidic than usual due to air pollution (caused by sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides).
What is a catalytic converter?
A device fitted to the exhaust pipe of a vehicle to change harmful pollutant gases into less harmful gases.
What is complete combustion?
When a substance reacts fully with oxygen: hydrocarbon + oxygen – carbon dioxide + water.
What is incomplete combustion?
When a substance reacts only partially with oxygen, such as when carbon burns in air producing carbon dioxide.
What is soot?
A form of carbon which is produced as very fine particles when hydrocarbon fuels undergo incomplete combustion.
