A fully qualified lawyer who normally has been a barrister for several years
Appointed by the government
Is impartial
Know the rules about courtroom procedures inside and out

Partiea nd representatives:
Each party prepares and presents their cases
Courts can be complicated, scary, nerve wracking and full of rules - so people must hire lawyers to help them present their cases
The judge cannot help out - even if the lawyer or parties are messing up their case
