MCBs Flashcards
What is arch extinction
Guiding the arch through V splitter plates
V plates split, cool and de-ionises arch
Arch chamber arrangements provide the breaking capacity of MCB
Advantages of MCB over fuses
Readily identified
Cannot be reset when fault exists
Tamperproof
Do not age from use
Locking devices can be attached
What page of rules has fault loop impedance
Page 125
How to find circuit current
P = V I cos0
How to find prospective fault current
If = V/ ZL (fault loop impedance)
What dangers arise if an earth fault occurs
Touch voltage rises above 50v
Cable suffers extreme thermal stress
Method for reducing danger of earth fault
RCD protection
Type B MCB
Domestic installations
Little or no switching surge
Type C MCB
High inductive circuits
ie. Banks of fluorescent lighting
Type D MCB
High inrush currents
ie. Transformers and welding equipment
Procedure to verify RCD
- Connect RCD tester
- Power off and polarity correct
- Set test current to 5xI^n
- Selector switch to 0 degrees
- Record RCD response time
- Selector switch to 180 degrees
- Verify longest trip time doesn’t exceed maximum operation time
