MC Final: Conditions of Practice Flashcards
What is deliberate practice?
activities specifically designed to improve current levels of performance
requires effort and not usually enjoyable
ex: constraint induced movement therapy
What are off task practice considerations?
motivation, verbal info, perceptual learning, observational learning, mental practice
What are on task practice considerations?
distribution of practice, variability of practice, scheduling practice, part vs whole practice, guidance
What is the role of motivation in motor learning?
facilitates more practice which drives neuroplasticity, helps focus attention on task being learned
How does motivation help with pt goal setting?
selecting tasks that are important to pt can lead to motivation, make goals specific and measurable
What is verbal information?
instructions, focus of attention
What is perceptual learning?
expose learner to environmental stimulus that will be experienced in the task
ex: baseball batter can watch flight of a curve ball before trying to swing at it, walking the track before the compeition
What is observational learning?
effective for learning strategies you can get temporal and spatial information
What is spatial and temporal information?
spatial- ex: acquisition of sign language
temporal- provide reference of correctness
How are models best used for learning?
combining real physical practice with model observation is best for improved retention and transfer of learning
What is massed practice?
practice that is closely spaced with little rest
What is distributed practice?
spaced further, more rest
Which is better?
most studies show distributed although could be due to less fatigue
Which is more efficient?
distributed- learn more during unit of practice but takes longer
massed- less effective but less time
TRADE OFF
What are two different ways of practicing?
constant- do same task
variable - switch between tasks
