May 2016 Flashcards
How would you use halon?
Carry extinguisher using carrying handle.
Twist and pull out the ring pin to break the plastic seal.
Hold upright with hand under handle and thumb on top of lever.
From distance of approx 1-2 metres, direct the nozzle towards base of fire.
Squeeze lever downward with thumb.
Spray in a sweeping side to side motion (open fires)
Spray in short bursts for contained fires.
Limitations of halon
Hold within 60 degrees of vertical.
When using on Class A fire, water must be used afterwards to remove the heat element.
Before discharging a halon in the flight deck, flight crew should put on their full face masks and set the oxygen regulators at 100% (diluter level)
What is the duration of halon?
Approx 9 seconds when used correctly
When does cabin crew member carry out a pre flight check?
Pre flight check is to be conducted at the firs sector for each crew and anytime the aircraft is left unattended or a change of aircraft.
Pre flight check of manual demo kit
Correct contents, quantity, and securely stowed
Contents of manual demo kit
One demo life jacket
One demo oxygen mask
One demo seat belt
One demo safety instruction card (correct for aircraft type)
When is manual demo kit used
Should the safety video fail, the kit is used to carry out a manual pre flight and emergency safety briefing to passengers
When does the sterile flight deck policy start on departure
Starts From final aircraft door closure and ends when fasten seat belt sign is switched off after take off.
When does sterile flight deck policy start for arrival?
Starts when fasten seat belt sign is switched on for descent and ends when the first aircraft door is opened.
What is the communication protocol during the sterile flight deck phase?
In event of an abnormal/emergency situation, cabin crew should contact the purser or CSV who will in turn contact the flight deck.
Entry into the flight deck is not permitted, except when cabin crew are requested to enter by the operating flight crew for safety related issues.
When does the no contact period start on departure?
Starts from the start of the take off roll and ends when the landing gear retracts.
(Crew incl purser shall not contact flight crew during this period)
What does door ownership mean?
Cabin crew assigned to a door has ownership for:
Arming and disarming
Preflight check
No cabin crew will
Perform these duties on behalf of another
Why is the PA for arming of the door and who makes it?
Purser PA “cabin crew prepare all doors and cross check”
What is the PA for disarming the dooor and who makes it?
Flight crew PA “cabin crew prepare all doors and crosscheck”
What are the normal door operation SOPs upon arrival?
- fasten seat belt sign must be switched off
- purser to make a PA “clear to open doors” after seat belt sign switched off.
- ground personnel will knock on the viewing window, cabin crew to acknowledge the knock by signalling with a thumbs up through door window
- door operator must have a checker present prior to opening the cabin door: operater verbally states “door disarmed”. Checker verbally states “door disarmed, clear to open door”
What is the definition of a slow decompression?
It is a slow escape of pressure which may or may not be apparent to crew or passengers. It may occur due to a failed pressurization system, a cracked window or door seal.
What are the subjective and objective signs of a slow decompression?
Objective: hissing sound in affected area
Subjective: gradual cold sensation
What are cabincrew actions during a slow decompression?
Inform the flight crew and other cabin crew members.
Move passengers away from the area. If not possible, passengers must fasten seat belts.
Use pillows and blankets to cover the leak and reduce noise level.
Monitor the area regularly.
What is the definition of a rapid decompression
It may be caused by the loss of a window, door or structural damage, allowing the cabin pressure to escape rapidly out of the cabin.
What should the cabin crew do if smoke or fumes are present in the cabin?
Move pax away from the affected area
Distribute wet towels to pax and instruct them to cover their nose and mouth, bend down at armrest level and breathe normally.
Avoid opening the flight deck door, unless absolutely necessary
What are cabin crew actions upon discovering an over fire?
Keep oven door closed to deprive fire of oxygen, as fire may self extinguish.
Switch off current.
Open oven door slowly, use a halon, close the door.
Repeat steps as necessary.
Check for secondary fires and monitor the area.
What are cabin crew actions upon discovering oven smoke?
Close oven door Switch off current Open oven door slowly to investigate Close oven door if no fire present Stand by with halon Monitor area
When fire is extinguished, what should crew actions be?
Check that no re-ignition is possible. All burnt non electrical material should be thoroughly soaked. Use water from galley, coffee, tea, carbonated, non alcoholic beverages.
What colour are the girt bars when the B777 door is armed/disarmed
Armed: yellow
Disarmed: black
