Why did it happen when it did
A
The post war baby boom meant there were not enough resources in education, housing etc for the population. Also a general feeling of social malaise towards the structure of leadership in society.

A
De Gaulle won but there was a recognition that people were fed up of him, he was too old, too traditional and too conservative. People liked Gaullism but not De Gaulle.
