Enucleation
removal of entire eye, leaves ocular muscles, fat and conjunctiva intact
evisceration
removal of internal contents of eye, leaving the white part of the eye and ocular muscles intact
anophthalmia (a-naaf-thal-mee-uh)
congenital absence of the eye
melanoma of the eye
cancer that occurs in various parts of the eye
retinoblastoma
cancer that starts in the retina; most common type of eye cancer in children
enophthalmos (eh-nuhf-thal-mus)
posterior displacement/sinking of the eye due to either a congenital defect (primary) or to an acquired change in volume within the orbital cavity due to fracture or decreased soft tissue volume (secondary)
treatment of enophthalmos due to orbital trauma
volume is restored by reconstructing orbit and placing an implant
treatment of enophthalmos (eh-nuhf-thal-mus) NOT due to orbital trauma
implant can be placed beneath the globe to position it at the appropriate height (wedge)
